It's summertime and children love to
play in the yard under the bright, warm sun. If you leave your child
unattended, make sure there are no poisonous flowers in the yard. If you
have them, make sure your child can't get to them. Here are a few
flowers that can cause problems:
1) Peace lilies, philodendron, caladium and dumb cane can cause swollen mouths. The leaves of these plants have needle-like crystals that won't harm children if touched, but can cause problems if bitten.
2) Holly, yew and poke weed contain toxins that irritate the gastrointestinal tract causing nausea and an upset stomach. /p>
3) Azaleas, lily of the valley, foxglove, oleander and rhododendrons can cause tiredness and a slow pulse.
If your child eats any of these plants, call the poison center or your doctor straight away. Here's a more complete list of un-edible flowers.
